Cicada

We get the 17 year kind in droves here, which happened in 2004. That's where you can't even walk without stepping on them and in some places it's like sheets of these big bugs that are 3 - 4 layers deep. We also get the yearly kind and this year they seem more prevalent than normal. They are loud. One bug can produce a buzzing sound up to 120db! And they are big, up to 2". Riding at 40+mph and getting smacked in the face with one of these is a wake up call! They live in the soil and come out these very alien looking bugs and then this winged creature hatches out of it's skin. Sounds like a horror movie. Mother nature is weird.
