Really there a couple of roads that you can take from downtown Chicago straight west, completely through and out of the state. Route 64 is one of them, Route 34, Route 30 and so is Route 20. Pick one for a nice day trip. No highway, nice country scenery, some small towns. All in all a nice ride. It's amazing how different it is even 1 hour outside of the Chicago city limits. You can run Route 2 from Rockford, along the river down to Sterling then catch 30 and head west too. That's really nice riding.
